Major soccer events get underway in June

Fans of international soccer will see a pair of major events get underway in the month of June, with UEFA Euro 2024 and the 2024 Copa America tournaments both hitting the field in the weeks ahead.

Euro 2024 will be hosted by Germany and gets underway on June 14. A total of 24 teams will take part in that event, which is spread across 10 host cities around the country. The Euro 2024 championship game will take place on July 14 in Berlin.

The 2024 Copa America, meanwhile, will be hosted by the United States and gets underway on June 20. A total of 16 teams will take part in that event, which is spread across 14 host cites around the country. The 2024 Copa America championship game will also take place on July 14, in Miami.

Here’s a look at closer look at both those events, plus one other tournament coming up as well:

UEFA Euro 2024: Overview and Schedule

The 24 teams taking part in Euro 2024 are split into six groups (Groups A through F) of four teams each. The host Germans highlight Group A, which also includes Scotland, Hungary, and Switzerland. Group B is made up of Spain, Croatia, Italy, and Albania, while Group C features Slovenia, Denmark, Serbia, and England.

Group D then has Poland, the Netherlands, Austria, and France, with Group E including Belgium, Slovakia, Romania, and Ukraine, and Group F rounding out the event with Turkiye, Georgia, Portugal, and Czechia. Group-stage games – a round-robin – run from June 14 to June 26, with the top two finishers in each group plus the four best third-place teams advancing to the knockout stage.

Those 16 teams are then slotted into a single-elimination bracket, with the Round of 16 games running from June 29 to July 2, the quarterfinals on July 5 and July 6, and the semifinals on July 9 and July 10. The championship game on July 14 will take place at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.

2024 Copa America: Overview and Schedule

The 16 teams taking part in the 2024 Copa America come from both the CONMEBOL (10) and CONCACAF (6) federations, and they’ve been divided into four groups (Groups A through D). Group A is made up of Argentina, Peru, Chile, and Canada, while Group B consists of Mexico, Ecuador, Venezuela, and Jamaica.

The host Americans are then in Group C along with Uruguay, Panama, and Bolivia, while Group D features Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, and Costa Rica. Group stage games – again, a round-robin – run from June 20 to July 1, with the top two finishers in each group advancing to the knockout stage.

Those eight teams will then play quarterfinal matchups on July 4, July 5, and July 6 in Houston, Arlington, Las Vegas, and Glendale, with the winners advancing to the semifinals in East Rutherford and Charlotte on July 9 and July 10. The third-place game takes place on July 13, also in Charlotte, with the championship game set for July 14 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

And don’t forget about the Olympics as well

Along with Euro 2024 and the 2024 Copa America, there’s also the Olympic soccer tournament going on at the 2024 Summer Games in France. That event runs from July 24 to August 10 and is spread over seven host cities for the men’s and women’s events. For the men’s tournament, it’s 16 teams in four groups of four, while the women’s tournament has 12 teams in three groups of four.
