The Olympics arrive on July sports calendar
Two major soccer events come to a close and the Summer Olympics get underway in Paris. Here’s a look at 10 highlights on the July sports calendar, including major tennis and golf tournaments.
MLB Regular Season (July 1-31)
The first Sunday Night Baseball matchup of July has the New York Yankees hosting the rival Boston Red Sox on July 7, while the following week features a marquee National League matchup between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. As well, the Red Sox visit the Dodgers coming out of the league’s All-Star Break, with that series getting going on July 19.
WNBA Regular Season (July 1-17)
The marquee WNBA matchup early in July has the Indiana Fever taking on the Las Vegas Aces in an ESPN primetime contest on July 2, while the league will pause its regular-season schedule leading up to its All-Star Game (between Team USA and Team WNBA) on July 20 and the subsequent Summer Olympics in Paris. The league’s schedule will then resume with games on August 15.
Wimbledon (July 1-14)
This year’s Wimbledon tennis championships get underway on July 1 at the All-England Club. In the men’s bracket Jannik Sinner is the top seed followed by Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, and Daniil Medvedev. Over in the women’s bracket it’s Iga Swiatek who is the top seed, followed by Coco Gauff, Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina, and Jessica Pegul. Alcaraz was the winner of the men’s singles title last year, while Marketa Vondrousova was the women’s champion.
UEFA Euro 2024 Final (July 14)
The knockout stage for UEFA Euro 2024 got underway with its Round of 16 matchups in the last days of June and runs through July 2. The tournament, whittled down to just eight remaining teams, will then stage its quarterfinal games on July 5-6, and its semifinal games on July 9-10. The championship game for UEFA Euro 2024 will take place on July 14 at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.
2024 Copa America Final (July 14)
The group stage for the 2024 Copa America wraps up early in July, with the quarterfinals set for July 4-6, the semifinals set for July 9-10, the third-place game scheduled for July 13, and the tournament then wrapping up with its championship game on July 14 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida.
MLB Home Run Derby (July 15)
The Home Run Derby opens the MLB All-Star Break, with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Toronto Blue Jays picking up the victory at the event last year by defeating Randy Arozarena of the Tampa Bay Rays in the final round. Juan Soto was the winner of the Home Run Derby back in 2022, while Pete Alonso claimed the title in both 2019 and 2021 (there was no contest held during the 2020 season).
MLB All-Star Game (July 16)
This year’s MLB All-Star Game between the top players in the American League and the National League will be hosted by Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. The National League defeated the American League by a score of 3-2 in last year’s game at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, ending a run of nine straight AL victories in the contest. Overall the AL has a 47-44 edge all-time against the NL.
The Open Championship (July 18-21)
The 2024 Open Championship is set for Royal Troon Golf Club in Ayrshire, Scotland. Brian Harman cruised to a victory at this event at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in 2023, finishing six strokes up on each of Jason Day, Tom Kim, Jon Rahm, and Sepp Straka and seven strokes up on Emiliano Grillo and Rory McIlroy. That was Harman’s first (and so far his only) victory at a major tournament.
2024 Summer Olympics (July 26-31)
The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris will have its opening ceremonies on July 26 at the Jardins du Trocadero, consist of 19 days of competition, and wrap up with its closing ceremonies on August 11 at Stade de France. There will be 329 events spread over 32 sports (now including breakdancing), with over 10,000 athletes set to participate representing over 200 different Olympic committees.
UFC 304: Edwards vs. Muhammad (July 27)
UFC 304 will take place at the Co-op Live arena in Manchester, England, with the card highlighted by a clash between champion Leon Edwards and challenger Belal Muhammad for the UFC Welterweight Championship. As well, Tom Aspinall will take on Curtis Blaydes for the interim UFC Heavyweight Championship, while Bobby Green and Paddy Pimblett will meet in a lightweight bout.
