A Sports Viewing Guide for Christmas 2024
It won’t be a quiet Christmas Day for sports fans this year, as the NFL and the NBA are both offering up a marquee slate of games for those that want to get away from the hustle and bustle of holiday activities.
NFL has two games scheduled for Christmas Day
The NFL will kick off its Week 17 schedule on a Wednesday to allow the league to stage two games on Christmas Day. First, the Kansas City Chiefs will be in Pittsburgh to take on the Steelers in a 1:00pm ET contest. Then, the Houston Texans will get a visit from the Baltimore Ravens in a 4:30pm ET contest. Both of those games will be streamed on Netflix for national audiences, and the Ravens/Texans game has the added bonus of a Beyonce halftime performance as well – with the music superstar a native of Houston.
NBA slate for Christmas Day features five games
The NBA would probably prefer to have Christmas Day all to itself again, but it’ll have to battle the NFL for viewers at least during the afternoon window as it stages a five-game schedule. The San Antonio Spurs and the New York Knicks will get things going with a 12:00pm ET tipoff at Madison Square Garden, with the Dallas Mavericks hosting the Minnesota Timberwolves at 2:30pm ET, and the Boston Celtics getting a visit from the Philadelphia 76ers at 5:00pm ET. It’s then the Los Angeles Lakers at the Golden State Warriors at 8:00pm ET, and the Denver Nuggets at the Phoenix Suns to end the day at 10:30pm ET.
Hawaii Bowl, Diamond Head Classic also on tap
College football won’t stage any of its expanded 12-team College Football Playoff slate on Christmas Day, but as usual it does offer up the Hawaii Bowl on Christmas Eve for those that are all done wrapping their presents and getting them under the tree. That gets underway at 8:00pm ET from Honolulu. As well, college basketball will also stage a Hawaii-based event, with eight schools competing in the Diamond Head Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center from December 22-25. The eight schools taking part in the event are Charleston, Charlotte, Hawaii, Loyola Chicago, Murray State, Nebraska, Oakland, and Oregon State.
Where can I watch all of the Christmas games?
As we said, the two NFL games on Christmas Day will be streamed on Netflix, although there will also be local broadcasts for the four teams in action. The NBA games on Christmas Day will be shown on ABC and ESPN, with the Hawaii Bowl on ESPN, and the Diamond Head Classic games on ESPN2 and ESPNU.
