Tennis, baseball tops on July sports calendar

Wimbledon hits the grass, and Major League Baseball hits its All-Star Break. Here’s a look at 10 highlights on the July sports calendar, including The Open Championship plus a major UFC event in New Orleans.

Wimbledon (July 1-13)

With the preliminary rounds out of the way the 2025 Wimbledon Championships will get going at the outset of July and continue through the finals on July 12 and July 13. Jannik Sinner is the top seed for the men’s singles draw, followed by Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, Jack Draper, and Taylor Fritz. Aryna Sabalenka is the top seed for the women’s singles draw, followed by Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, Jasmine Paolini, and Zheng Qinwen. Alcaraz and Barbora Krejcikova won the Wimbledon singles draws in 2024.

MLB Regular Season (July 1-31)

Series on the MLB schedule early in July include the New York Yankees at the Toronto Blue Jays, the San Diego Padres at the Philadelphia Phillies, and the Cleveland Guardians at the Chicago Cubs, while the first Sunday of the month includes an ESPN primetime doubleheader with the Cubs hosting the St. Louis Cardinals then the Padres getting a visit from the Texas Rangers. The All-Star Break begins on July 14.

WNBA Regular Season (July 1-31)

The WNBA schedule for the month tips off with a featured game between the Indiana Fever and the Minnesota Lynx on July 1 on Prime Video, with the Fever also playing on July 3 at home against the Las Vegas Aces. Other matchups to start July include Los Angeles at New York and Phoenix at Dallas on July 3, while the first Saturday of the month features Los Angeles at Indiana and Golden State at Minnesota.

F1 British Grand Prix (July 6)

The drivers of Formula 1 will hit the track at Silverstone Circuit on July 6 for the 2025 British Grand Prix, with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri holding a 15-point lead in the driver standings over teammate Lando Norris heading into the race. Lewis Hamilton won the British Grand Prix last year and in eight of the past 11 years. Max Verstappen claimed this event back in 2023, and Carlos Sainz Jr. was the race winner in 2022.

NASCAR Grant Park 165 (July 6)

NASCAR’s in-season challenge continues in July with the Grant Park 165 on the Chicago Street Course on July 6 – the ‘Round of 16’ phase of the event. Also on the NASCAR schedule for the month of July are the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway on July 13, the AutoTrader EchoPark Automotive 400 at Dover Motor Speedway on July 20, and the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on July 27.

MLB Home Run Derby (July 14)

MLB’s All-Star Break features the annual Home Run Derby on the Monday night, with this year’s field for the event at Truist Park in Atlanta set to include early-named participants Ronald Acuna Jr. of the Braves and Cal Raleigh of the Mariners. Last year Teoscar Hernandez topped Bobby Witt Jr. in the Home Run Derby’s final round, with Alec Bohm and Jose Ramirez falling to that pair of sluggers in the semifinals.

MLB All-Star Game (July 15)

The 2025 MLB All-Star Game is set for Tuesday, July 15 at the home of the Atlanta Braves, Truist Park. Last year the American League topped the National League by a 5-3 score in this contest at Globe Life Field in Arlington, after the NL had won the 2023 All-Star Game by a 3-2 score at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. The AL has won the All-Star Game in 10 of the last 11 years and holds a 48-44 edge in the game’s history.

The Open Championship (July 17-20)

It’s the 153rd edition of The Open Championship this year, with the event set to take place at the Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Island. Xander Schauffele won this tournament last year at Royal Troon, finishing two strokes ahead of Billy Horschel and Justin Rose, and three strokes up on Thriston Lawrence. Brian Harman claimed this event back in 2023, Cameron Smith in 2022, and Collin Morikawa in 2021.

UFC 318: Holloway vs. Poirier (July 19)

The UFC’s big event on the July calendar is UFC 318: Holloway vs. Poirier at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, with Max Holloway taking on Dustin Poirier in a Lightweight bout for the circuit’s honorary “BMF” title. As well, Ateba Abega Gautier will face Robert Valentin and Paulo Costa will meet Roman Kopylov in middleweight fights, and Michael Johnson battles Daniel Zellhuber in a lightweight contest.

F1 Belgian Grand Prix (July 27)

The second Formula 1 race on the July calendar will be the Belgian Grand Prix at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps on July 27, with Hamilton the winner of this race in 2024 and Verstappen taking the checkered flag at the event in each of 2023, 2022, and 2021. The team standings heading into the month of July have McLaren with a sizeable 417-210 lead on Ferrari, with Mercedes sitting third at 209 points.
