Football is back on August sports calendar

Both the NFL and college football return on a loaded August slate. Here’s a look at 10 highlights on the August sports calendar, including the U.S. Open in Queens and the TOUR Championship at East Lake.

MLB Regular Season (August 1-31)

Series on the MLB slate to begin the month of August include Detroit at Philadelphia, Houston at Boston, Texas at Seattle, and the Yankees at Miami, with the Tigers at the Phillies for the first Sunday Night Baseball broadcast of the month on ESPN. The following week the Dodgers will get a visit from the Cardinals and the Reds will play the Cubs in Chicago while the Yankees have a series at the Rangers.

WNBA Regular Season (August 1-31)

The WNBA’s August schedule begins with a five-game slate on August 1 including Indiana at Dallas, while the next day features a nationally-broadcast matinee with Minnesota at Las Vegas on ABC. The Fever will also be in Seattle for an ABC-televised afternoon game on Sunday, August 3. The August schedule closes out on August 31 with two games on tap, Washington at Los Angeles and Indiana at Golden State.

F1 Hungarian Grand Prix (August 3)

The drivers of Formula 1 will return to the track on August 3 for the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring. Oscar Piastri won the Hungarian Grand Prix last year, with Max Verstappen taking the checkered flag at the event in both 2022 and 2023. Piastri heads into the month of August with a 266-260 lead on McLaren teammate Lando Norris in the driver’s standings. Verstappen sits at 185 points.

NASCAR Iowa Corn 350 (August 3)

There are five races on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule for August, starting with the Iowa Corn 350 at Iowa Speedway on August 3 and also including events at Watkins Glen International, Richmond Raceway, Daytona International Speedway, and Darlington Raceway. That Darlington event – the Cook Out Southern 500 – will begin the series’ playoff schedule which wraps up with its November championship.

NFL Preseason Schedule (August 7-23)

Week 1 of the three-week NFL preseason runs from August 7-10, with Week 2 spanning August 15-18, and Week 3 capping the exhibition slate from August 21-23. National games include Buffalo at Chicago on FOX on August 17, Cincinnati at Washington on ESPN on August 18, and Minnesota at Tennessee on CBS on August 22. Prime Video will also stream the New England at the New York Giants game on August 21.

UFC 319: du Plessis vs. Chimaev (August 16)

The major UFC event on the August schedule is UFC 319: du Plessis vs. Chimaev which is set for August 16 at the United Center in Chicago. Dricus du Plessis will enter the octagon to defend his Middleweight championship belt against Khamzat Chimaev that night, while another Middleweight bout will see Jared Cannonier face Michael Page. As well, Geoff Neal will be up against Carlos Prates in a Welterweight fight.

TOUR Championship (August 21-24)

The three-event FedExCup playoffs that cap off the PGA Tour season begin with the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind (August 7-10), continue with the BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club (August 14-17), and conclude with the TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Club. Scottie Scheffler won the TOUR Championship last year, finishing four strokes ahead of Collin Morikawa for the week.

College Football Regular Season Schedule (August 23-31)

Week 1 of the college football season gets underway on August 23 with five games on that day’s slate including Iowa State at Kansas State (in Ireland) and Stanford at Hawaii. Week 1 of the season then continues with games from August 28-31, with notable matchups including Syracuse at Tennessee (in Atlanta), Texas at Ohio State, Alabama at Florida State, LSU at Clemson, and Notre Dame at Miami.

U.S. Open (August 24-31)

The 2025 U.S. Open Tennis Championships get underway in Queens, New York on August 24 and run through September 7. Jannik Sinner was the men’s singles champion at the U.S. Open last year, topping Taylor Fritz 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 in the final. Novak Djokovic won in 2023, and Carlos Alcaraz won in 2022. Aryna Sabalenka was the women’s singles champion in 2024, knocking off Jessica Pegula by scores of 7-5, 7-5.

F1 Dutch Grand Prix (August 31)

The second event on the F1 calendar for August is the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort on August 31. Norris was the winner of the Dutch Grand Prix last year, while Verstappen crossed the finish line in first place in each of 2021, 2022, and 2023. Verstappen’s Red Bull team heads into August in fourth place in the constructor’s standings with 192 points, trailing McLaren (516), Ferrari (248), and Mercedes (220).
