Super Bowl arrives on February sports calendar
Super Bowl LIX between the Chiefs and Eagles will get much of the attention this month. Here’s a look at 10 highlights on the February sports calendar, including the 4 Nations Face-Off and the Daytona 500.
NFL Pro Bowl Games (February 1-2)
The National Football League has given up on trying to play an actual game on Pro Bowl weekend, so this two-day event will feature various competitions on Saturday and Sunday capped off by a Flag Football finale. Peyton Manning and Eli Manning have been named as the coaches for the AFC and NFC teams, respectively. For those just interested in the Flag Football game, that’s at 3pm ET on Sunday afternoon.
NBA Regular Season (February 1-28)
It’s the Lakers at the Knicks to tip off the NBA’s February slate, as those teams meet in an 8:30pm ET contest on ABC on February 1. The next day it’s Boston at Philadelphia and Memphis at Milwaukee on ESPN, with the West-leading Thunder hosting the Suns in another ESPN matchup on February 5. The NBA will also have its All-Star break in February, with no regular season games played from February 14-18.
NHL Regular Season (February 1-28)
The NHL’s February slate gets underway on the first Saturday of the month with a pair of ABC matinees as Florida hosts Chicago and the Rangers visit Boston, with Toronto at Edmonton the highlight matchup on the evening’s schedule. The league will also take a lengthy break in the middle of the month as the 4 Nations Face-Off event is played in lieu of an All-Star Game. Regular season action resumes February 22.
College Basketball Regular Season (February 1-28)
The college basketball slate for February features a matchup of top-10 teams on February 1 as Tennessee hosts Florida, with longtime rivals North Carolina and Duke hitting the court together later in the day. Iowa State plays at Kansas on February 3, with Florida at Auburn on February 8, and Auburn at Alabama on February 15. Later in the month, Iowa State hits the hardwood at Houston in a February 22 contest.
UFC 312: du Plessis vs. Strickland (February 8)
The UFC Middleweight Championship will be on the line at UFC 312 as champion Dricus du Plessis takes on challenger Sean Strickland at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, Australia. Also on the card for UFC 312, champion Zhang Weili will face challenger Tatiana Suarez for the UFC Women’s Strawweight Championship, and Justin Tafa will head into the Octagon with Tallison Teixeira in a heavyweight bout.
Super Bowl LIX (February 9)
Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs will be looking for a third straight Super Bowl title – something that’s never been done before – when they face the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. The Chiefs beat the Buffalo Bills 32-29 in the AFC Championship Game, while the Eagles thumped the Washington Commanders 55-23 in the NFC Championship Game.
4 Nations Face-Off (February 12-20)
The NHL’s midseason break for this season is a four-team tournament of players from Canada, the United States, Sweden, and Finland, with round robin action getting underway on February 12, and the event’s championship game set for February 20. All games of the tournament will be played at either the Bell Centre in Montreal or TD Garden in Boston, with the championship game scheduled for 8pm ET on ESPN.
The Genesis Invitational (February 13-16)
The PGA Tour offers up one of its ‘signature events’ in the middle of February as the circuit competes in The Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines Golf Course from February 13-16. Hideki Matsuyama won this event last year, finishing three strokes ahead of both Luke List and Will Zalatoris, with Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay, and Adam Hadwin ending up four strokes behind the leader in a tie for fourth place.
Daytona 500 (February 16)
The biggest event on the NASCAR Cup Series schedule takes place on Sunday, February 16 as the circuit’s drivers hit the track at Daytona International Speedway for the 2025 edition of the Daytona 500. William Byron took the checkered flag at the Daytona 500 last year, with Alex Bowman and Christopher Bell following him across the finish line. Corey LaJoie and Bubba Wallace rounded out the top-five finishers.
NBA All-Star Game (February 16)
The NBA’s All-Star weekend spreads events over three days at the Chase Center in San Francisco, with the celebrity game and rising stars game on Friday, the skills challenge, three-point contest, and slam dunk contest on Saturday, and the All-Star Game itself on Sunday. The All-Star Game this year will be a four-team mini tourney, consisting of three teams of all-stars and the winner of the rising stars game.
